According to research we carried out in February and March 2021, picturesque TV programmes can significantly drive up house prices in areas where they are filmed.

In 2020, where we spent more time at home than ever before, time on streaming services doubled and more and more households subscribed to streaming platforms to pass the time in lockdown.

For towns that were featured in popular TV shows, we found that house prices increased on average by 5%. Neighbouring towns rose by just 2%.

The town that saw the biggest increase in house prices was Dunlop, East Ayrshire, the set of hit ITV drama Deadwater Fell. Prices there rose by 9.5% in 2020, more than double the nearby town of East Kilbride.

In Richmond upon Thames, the location for Netflix's Bridgerton, house prices spiked by 5.35% - 6 times the 0.88% increase seen over the river in Twickenham.
